Components of a sentence

Predicate

The predicate is the most important part of a sentence, one of its main constituents. It is usually expressed by a verb in a finite form.

Question: Čo robí + subject?

  • Dnes večer ideme do kina.
  • Karl je v Nemecku.
  • Chcete ísť s nami?
  • Spite osem hodín!

Subject

The subject is the second main element of a clause. It is always in the nominative.

Question: Kto/čo + predicate?

  • Žiak píše úlohu.
  • Dieťa plače.
  • Dievčatá tancujú.

In Slovak, the subject (expressed by a pronoun) can be included or left out:

  • Som Zuzana./Ja som Zuzana.
  • Bývaš v Bratislave./Ty bývaš v Bratislave.

Both options are correct. The second option is often used to add emphasis to the subject:

  • JA bývam v Bratislave, TY v Trnave.

Some sentences have no subject.

  • Prší.
  • Sneží.
  • Hrmí.
  • Je teplo.
