Formation of questions

Usual word order in a declarative sentence:
subject + predicate + other constituents of the sentence

  • (Ja) mám devätnásť rokov.
  • Zuzana dvadsať rokov.

In a question (interrogative sentence) we change the order of the subject and the predicate:

    • Máš (ty) dvadsať rokov? Nie, ja nemám dvadsať rokov.
    • Zuzka dvadsať rokov? Áno, Zuzka dvadsať rokov.
This type of question can be answered with áno – nie (yes – no). These are so-called decision-making questions. They have a rising tone.
    • Máš dvadsať rokov?
    • Voláš sa Kristína?
    • Máš sa dobre?
    • Koľko máš (ty) rokov?
    • Koľko Zuzka rokov?
This type of question cannot be answered with áno – nie (yes – no). Instead, the person answering the question fills in the missing information. These questions are referred to as "who-questions" or supplementary questions. They begin with an interrogative pronoun (e.g. kto, čo, koľko, kde...) and have a falling tone.
    • Koľko máš rokov?
    • Ako sa voláš?
    • Kde bývaš?
