Wolfgang Kempelen (1734 - 1804) was a Hungarian polytechnician and inventor of German nationality born in Bratislava. He traveled around Europe with his chess automaton (Turek). The machine beat Frederick II in Berlin and Napoleon in 1808. One of his most famous inventions is a speaking machine. While describing his machine, Kempelen researched the mechanisms of human speech, voice analysis and also the origin of European languages and their alphabets.
