About

Slovak online - quick and easy

(Slovak learning website)

This project is supported by the European Commission as part of the KA2 – Languages – Lifelong Learning Programme. The coordinator of the project is the civil association Education@Internet (E@I) whose seat is in Partizánske.

E-learning is nowadays is widespread and common. Unfortunately, the Slovak language still lacks adequate Internet and e-learning opportunities. Until now, many who were interested in the language didn't have the opportunity to learn it – instead they had to rely on summer courses (relatively expensive and limited in terms of time and capacity), or give up their learning plans.

Moreover, in the present era of information and communication technologies, it's easier than ever to create a language course, both from a technical point of view and for the content.

Who is the course for?

The Slovak language is particularly useful for:

  • Foreigners living in Slovakia
  • Partners in mixed marriages
  • Inhabitants of border regions
  • Ethnic Slovaks abroad
  • Slovakists and Slavists
  • Immigrants
  • Students
  • Tourists

The Internet portal provides all interested parties with the opportunity to learn more about Slovak in their home country, as well as learning the basics of the language before arriving in Slovakia. Online learning also allows users to learn the language quickly and flexibly in their leisure time, while enjoying themselves with games, quizzes, and contests.

Why?

This online platform for learning Slovak is based on the international website “Lernu!”, an internet portal for learning Esperanto.

Lernu! (www.lernu.net) has been running since 2002 and is currently the world's largest Esperanto learning website. The website has been translated into 40 languages with more than 150 voluntary contributors (translators, teachers, proofreaders, etc.).

The experience gained in the creation of the Esperanto online course (from the perspective of both technical tools and content) led us to extend the project to national languages. We are particularly trying to make smaller European languages more visible, especially those for which online learning facilities have not been developed yet. Since E@I is registered in Slovakia, Slovak was a suitable candidate.
