Accent
In Slovak, the accent is almost always on the first syllable of the word. Exceptions occur mainly around monosyllables.
slovenský jazyk moja rodina mama a otec Učím sa slovenčinu.
kreslil som si Dal som jej knihu.
NOTE: The prolongation mark (diacritical mark in letters á, é, í, ó, ú, ý, ĺ, ŕ) does not designate that that the syllable should be emphasised! The prolongation mark only means that the syllable should be pronounced twice as long as a short syllable. Example:
mama | /mama/ |
ja mám | /ja ma:m/ |
The accent is not marked in Slovak words.
